A Versus - Apple iPad Air vs Nokia Lumia 2520
With Apple and Nokia launching the tablets on the same day, the comparisons are obvious. Apple, who was the leader in the tablets when it launched the first generation iPad has come a long way since then. We have had an iPad, iPad 2, iPad 3 and an iPad mini adding to which Apple launched its latest tablet called iPad Air. On the other hand, Nokia, which has been acquired by Microsoft recently has made its debut in the Tablet arena with Lumia 2520, which was launched yesterday. Though the technical specifications alone can't compare the devices alone, it's the performance that matters.
In this versus, we are putting the debutant Nokia Lumia in front of Apple iPad Air, which is a lighter, brighter and faster version of its previous versions. We will be comparing the specs and also have a look at the interest and the buzz these two tablets could generate once they are in the market.
First, lets talk a bit about iPad Air. Apple is known for refurbishing and upgrading their core configurations and tech specs rather than the hardware. Be it iPhone 4S from iPhone 4 or the iPhone 5S from iPhone 5, Apple made significant changes to the internal hardware rather than the looks. But, with iPad Air, Apple has taken a long leap ahead in terms of technical specifications, but also made significant changes to its volume as a whole by shrinking it and making it 20% thinner and 28% lighter than the previous iPad. Though the screen size remains the same at 9.7-inch Retina Display with 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution which has 3.1 million pixels.
Nokia, on the other hand looks to expand its popular Lumia series from affordable Lumia phones(520, 620, 625) to phablets(1520, 1320) and to tablets with the Lumia 2520. Nokia, which has been acquired by Microsoft recently for $7.2 billion made a lot of buzz with the news of launching a tablet post its acquisition. It is to be noted that Microsoft recently launched the Surface 2 tablet and Nokia seems to be influenced by it which makes its specs similar to that of Surface 2.
Coming to the comparison, this is the first time a Nokia Tablet is coming to the arena and that too against the champion iPad, so Apple might have light edge to begin with, but let us conclude it.
So, going by specs, we have a tie and Nokia seems to be doing very well in every front. Apple as always is prices very heavily. What is yet to be seen is whether Apple gets it fanboys going on with the latest upgrade of will Nokia make some inroads with it first tablet.
What works in favour of Apple iPad Air is that the Nokia Lumia 2520 according to some critics is doomed from the start, thanks to the decision to make it run Windows RT 8.1. That makes a degree of sense, but in reality it brings it closer to the Windows Phone experience in terms of design.
What works for Nokia is the polycarbonate cladding is impressive and the unibody design looks cool. The addition of the Storytelling app is great.
Though Nokia might win on many counters of tech specs but in terms of sales, Apple might have the final laugh.
