Samsung Galaxy Gear Propels The War of Smart Watches

All the speculations over the much awaited release of Samsung Galaxy devices was over last week with the release of three Galaxy entrants, Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 2014 edition and the first in its category from Samsung, a Smart Watch called Galaxy Gear. With a price tag of $299, Gear has a lot to prove as it stands against the Sony already available SmartWatch 2 and the others.

Much like the Sony SmartWatch 2, the Galaxy Gear is a smartphone accessory that can pick up your notifications, control your music playback, and on top of it, keep the time with a rich variety of watch faces to prove its watch tag, but unlike Sony's SmartWatch 2, Samsung has taken its Gear a few steps further by adding a 1.9-megapixel camera, a speaker, and 2 microphones allowing you to shoot short 720p movies and even manage phone calls with the Galaxy Gear. Though, Gear can not be used as a standalone phone and requires a compatible galaxy device to do so and relies heavily on them via its Bluetooth connection.

Sony SmartWatch 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Gear

At the time Galaxy Gear rolls out this month worldwide, it will be compatible with the freshly announced Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note Tab 10.1 2014 edition, while software updates for the Galaxy S4
, Galaxy S3, and Galaxy Note II are in the works to introduce compatibility there as well. The new software should begin rolling out from October. Given that Samsung's new Galaxy slates run Android 4.3, which supports the Bluetooth Low Energy standard, Samsung may well have just tipped its hand about when it intends to distribute the 4.3 upgrade to its older Galaxy handsets.
